Habitat for Humanity Service Event - Saturday, April 7 - 8:30am to 4:30pm

Fellow Georgetown Alumni,

I am psyched to let you know that I've arranged for local Georgetown Alumni to get together and participate in a Bay Area community service event. It will be a great opportunity to give back to the community, while at the same time you'll be able to network and socialize with your fellow classmates.

I've arranged for 15 to 20 volunteers to participate in a build with Habitat for Humanity at their Outer Mission site. I've been volunteering with them for about 2 years now and have had some wonderful opportunities to see how giving back is physically transforming and improving our community. I have learned a great deal about building houses and can't say enough good things about the project coordinators who make the day a great experience.

Here are a few details:

When: Saturday, April 7, 2007
Time: 8:30am to 4:30pm
Where: De Long Terrace @ Santa Cruz Ave - Outer Mission (see below)
Attire: Wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty and closed-toed shoes. The weather can be cold, windy, foggy and/or sunny so wear sunscreen and bring a sweatshirt. If you have work gloves it's nice to bring your own. Tools and safety equipment will be provided.
Lunch: Lunch is not provided so we will go to a local venue to grab something to eat.

How Sweet It Is! Hoyas Power Past Eagles In Second Round Of NCAA Tourney, 62-55Winston-Salem, N.C. - During the first half of Georgetown's second round NCAA Tournament game with Boston College, Head Coach John Thompson III spoke with junior center Roy Hibbert (Adelphi, Md./Georgetown Prep) as he sat on the bench after picking up two fouls in the game's first 14 minutes. The Hoyas' third-year head coach told the 7-2 center that the team would be going to him in the second half. Hibbert responded, scoring 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half as No. 2 seed Georgetown fought back from an eight-point deficit to beat their old foe from the BIG EAST Conference, 62-55, in front of 14,148 fans at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Saturday evening. The win moves the Hoyas into the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year and the 11th time in program history. It was the team's sixth-straight win, and the 17th in the last 18 for the Hoyas, who improve to 28-6 overall.

HOYA HOOPS: Wednesday February 21st

Wow. I mean wow. Our Georgetown Hoyas have been playing amazingly well and have moved up in the national rankings to # 12. And it's time for you to get out there and support them. Please plan to come on by the Bus Stop tomorrow (Wednesday) for happy hour. The game starts at 4:00 p.m., but we'll be there until about 7:00 p.m. (Hopefully celebrating!)

There are great drink specials ($1.50 beers!) and it's a great excuse to sneak out of work and hang out with some really great people. And plus, there's only four more regular season games this season, there's no time like now to jump on the Hoya bandwagon!

Hoyas Get Revenge on VillanovaPhiladelphia, Pa. — Junior forward Jeff Green (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) hit a running jumper with 20 seconds left, added two more free throws with 3.6 seconds on the clock and No. 14 Georgetown came back from an 11-point first-half deficit to beat Villanova, 58-55, in front of 19,089 fans at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia Saturday afternoon. It was the ninth-straight win for Georgetown, which improves to 20-5 overall and 10-2 in the BIG EAST, while Villanova falls to 18-8 overall and 6-6 in league play. The nine wins tie the longest win streak for the Hoyas since the 2003-04 season, when the Hoyas won nine-straight to open the season. Green Named BIG EAST Player of the WeekGeorgetown University junior men's basketball player Jeff Green (Hyattsville, Md./Northwestern) was named the BIG EAST Conference's Player of the Week on Monday, February 19. It is the second-straight week a member of the Hoyas was named Player of the Week, and the third time in the last four weeks. HOYA HOOPS: Hoyas vs. Notre Dame - Saturday, January 6 at 9:00 a.m

The Georgetown Hoyas Men's Basketball Team started off the year with high expectations and a #8 ranking in the AP poll. However, the team stumbled a bit in November, losing at home to Old Dominion and to Oregon, then losing a third game at Duke. The media jumped off the bandwagon. As with all bandwagon fans, they jumped off much too soon. NCAA Titles aren't won and lost in November, and the Hoyas lost a few games, but they were learning. The team was trying to incorporate six players into the rotation that didn't play much last year -- including three highly vaunted freshmen. In December, after the Duke loss, the team began to gel. The team beat Oral Roberts badly just weeks after ORU took down highly ranked Kansas.

After dispatching several easier opponents during finals, Georgetown then traveled to Michigan and dissected the two-loss Wolverines. In this streak, Georgetown hasn't won by less than 15, and has won four games by more than 20. In the meantime, Oregon and Duke are in the Top 10 -- demonstrating that those losses weren't so bad after all. The Hoyas are poised to win their first BE Title of any kind in years in what is a wide open Big East.
So get on the bandwagon! To summarize:

The phenomenal success of Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code has given new life to the
perennial debate about the nature and meaning of the Holy Grail.The story of the Grail,
usually identified as some kind of mystical vessel, has gripped the imaginations of millions
since it first appeared in several medieval romances. Of these,Wolfram von Eschenbach’s
Parzival (c.1200) is generally recognized as the most complex and beautiful. Strangely, in
Parzival, the Grail is identified as a stone rather than a cup or dish.This oddity is usually seen
as just another mystery, further evidence of the difficulty of discerning the true sources of the
Grail legend. In this groundbreaking study, Ronald Murphy seeks to dispel this mystery and
to enable a far better appreciation of Wolfram’s purposes.Wolfram, Murphy argues, wanted to
chastise his contemporaries who looked for the Grail in the possession of Muslims in the
Holy Land. This is Georgetown teaching at its best—stellar scholarship combined with
warm humanism. In the past Fr. Murphy has spoken about the Brothers Grimm,The History
of the Christmas Tree, Ritual and Realization and the role of the Christ as Warlord in
medieval Saxon Literature.

Daniel L. Byman is Associate Professor and Director of the Security Studies Program and the Center for Peace and Security Studies at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. He is also a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution. Dr. Byman has served as a Professional Staff Member with both the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks on the United States ("The 9-11 Commission") and the Joint 9/11 Inquiry Staff of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees. He has also worked as the Research Director of the Center for Middle East Public Policy at the RAND Corporation and as an analyst of the Middle East for the U.S. intelligence community. Dr. Byman has written widely on a range of topics related to terrorism, international security, and the Middle East. The Class of 2005, in their youth and vigor will be sponsoring a nationwide Happy Hour that will include 6 different locations around the country (SF below). We figured that in light of our stellar performance this year in the NCAA Tourney and because a Hoya gathering is never (or rarely) a bad idea, it was about time that Hoyas reconnect, and what better day than Georgetown Day to do it! Title: Great Power in quicksand: Vestiges of Rome in Modern Day Iraq The fate of Rome in Mesopotamia remains relevant for modern policy makers. Why? Because the Roman Empire faded into history at the dawn of the first pan-Arab state, and many on the so-called "Arab Street" now dearly hope this same fate might befall the United States. Provost Jim O'Donnell has a unique perspective on modern-day Iraq, thanks to his stature as one of the foremost experts on St. Augustine. St. Augustine of Hippo was at the same time a born-again Christian and an African, an anti-Semite and a theological fountainhead of Reformation theology on
grace. Dr. O'Donnell will use an Augustinian lens to examine the weaknesses and strengths that led to the decline of the Roman Empire and eventual rise of the Ottoman Empire, and he'll share a better perspective for understanding our world today. James J. O'Donnell received his Ph.D. from Yale, and then spent over two decades at the University of Pennsylvania in History and computer information systems. In 2002 he became Provost at Georgetown University. He has published nine books with a tenth forthcoming, and for the past decade has served as co-editor of /NewJour/. Please join us for what promises to be an educational and controversial evening
examining a long-ago nation at the periphery of the first global power, and a modern-day failed state at the far reaches of the latest global power.

Our mighty Hoyas are now in the Sweet 16 and playing this Friday evening and we want your support!

For those of you that couldn’t come Sunday for the last game watch, you missed a truly great one. We had more than 50 Hoya supporters overtake the entire back room of The Bus Stop. There were even “HOYA SAXA” chants back and forth! We expect even more support this Friday. Details are listed below. So please plan on being there and forward this email to all Bay Area Hoyas and friends. We want a huge crowd out for this one.

Try to get there by 6:00 p.m. (earlier is even better) to get fired up! There will be several drink specials and I hear that some Surfer on Acid shots might make an appearance.
